Baker Residential, a division of Baker Roofing Company, was recently asked to be part of a special project to put a roof on a new home for a wounded veteran. Jessie Fletcher enlisted in the United States Marines, in 2008, shortly after graduating high school. Following basic training and attending several military schools, Jessie was selected to join the Scout Sniper Platoon. In 2009, Jessie left for his first deployment to Afghanistan; this was one of the biggest joint operations of Operations Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.
In 2011, Jessie left for his second deployment to Helmond Province where he found himself on a mission providing watch for advancing units in the district when he stepped on an Improvised Explosive Device (IED). The blast amputated both legs and a few fingers; he was rushed to the United States for emergency medical attention. He spent a year in recovery at Walter Reed Hospital and now is living with his wife, Emily, in North Carolina attending college at Salem College in Winston Salem.
Jessie was selected to be a recipient of an adapted home from a veteran’s organization. Due to certain circumstances, the organization was not able to follow through with their commitment. After a year of no contact and the building at a standstill, Jessie decided it was best to move forward without the nonprofit. This decision left Jessie and Emily to raise the funds to lower the mortgage and to help complete the wheelchair accessible home on their own. They have received some grants and the community is coming together to help as much as possible. Construction began in 2013 and their home is expected to be completed Fall 2015. Jessie and his family are very appreciative of everything their friends, family and community have done to help and support them during this difficult time.
After two years of standstill construction, Jessie and his family are excited to move into their new home. Baker Residential is proud to be able to contribute, in a small way, to such a special project and to help Jessie and his family to begin building their life in a new home.
