History of Baker Roofing Company
From 1902 to 2016, Baker Roofing Company endured recessions, wars, a fire and more. What began as a tinsmith shop for the sole proprietor, W.P. Baker turned into a legacy; a nationally recognized roofing company working across the nation and internationally.
W. Prentiss Baker I Learns Roofing
In 1902 W. Prentiss Baker I began work as a tinsmith for $0.50 a week at Lumsden Brothers Sheet Metal Co.
Baker Roofing Company Opens
On Sept. 20th, 1915 W. P. Baker I opened his own roofing business “W. P. Baker Co.” in the southwest quadrant of 419 Gale St., Raleigh, NC.
Always Good Work
W. Prentiss Baker I posted a sign on the front door that remained part of Baker’s reputation.
Baker Partner with Horace Rawls
In 1920 W. P. Baker partnered with Rawls to form Baker & Rawls Tin Shop. The company now has 20 employees.
Baker & Rawls Moves to Davie St. Raleigh, NC
After a fire in it’s offices Baker & Rawls moved to it’s Davie Street offices built by Carolina Cotton Oil Company in 1888.
Baker & Brown Roofing Company
Bill Baker Junior succeeded his father as President and the company’s name changed to Baker & Brown.
Baker Since 1915
On January 1, 1966 Baker’s name changed to Baker Roofing Company.
Prentiss Baker III & Frank Baker
Prentiss Baker III began working for Baker Roofing in 1966 & Frank Baker started work with Baker in 1969.
A Place to Call Home
Baker Roofing Company moved to a new office and warehouse on 517 Mercury Street. By 1973, Baker had 75 employees.
Engineering News Record
Baker ranked nationally 17th out of 20 roofing subcontractors listed in Engineering News Record.
Expansion to VA
Baker Roofing expanded to Virginia, opening its first office in Norfolk, VA.
Baker Roofing opened the Charlotte, NC office.
The Baker Report
Prentiss started The Baker Report, the first company newsletter, to be distributed to all Baker customers, vendors & employees.
In 1999, Baker added 8,000 sq ft of office and shop space. By 2002, Baker was ranked 6th in the Nation in terms of revenue & leased the office at 613 Mercury Street. At the end of 2005, Baker leased another warehouse and office building, therefore expanding office space to the edge of the block.
Baker Roofing opened the Wilmington, NC office.
Baker reroofed Memphis Depot in 2009, the largest single roofing job in the nation that year. In 2010, Baker opened it’s Nashville, TN office.
Baker Roofing opened the Charleston office in January, 2011.
Baker Roofing Company purchased two more building located on Mercury street to accommodate two divisions, Baker Coatings and Baker Residential.
Baker Turns 100
Since 1915, Baker Roofing Company has grown in size, revenue and capability. From W. Prentiss Baker being the soul employee, to having over 1001 employees, 18 offices in 6 states across the Southeast, and the 2nd largest roofing contractor in the nation. Baker Roofing Company has been roofing across the Southeast for over 100 years, and is proud call its Raleigh, North Carolina headquarters home and plans to continue to uphold the promise made 100 years ago of, “Always Good Work.”
