Slate Roofing

Slate Repair & Replacement

Read Our Reviews
4.5/5
Slate roofing is known as one of the highest quality, longest-lasting, roofing materials on the market. Slate roofing tiles are cut from a metamorphic rock which is highly durable, cut and trimmed into the required sizes and thicknesses. A slate roof is a great option if you’re looking for a custom-made product that immediately gives character to a home or building that is unique and unlike any other type of roofing. Often times with slate, we see customers use copper in special features, such as the roof of a prominent bay window, gutters, and downspouts. Copper is neither coated nor painted because it weathers without corroding so it’s a great option in addition to your slate! We have certified installers of all of the trusted manufacturers. Our team will happily work with you to select a quality slate tile that fits the look of your home and your budget. In the meantime, check out our visualizer! This tool allows you to take a photo of your home and see what different exterior options would look like once installed.

Frequently Asked
Questions

How long does a slate roof last?

Slate is essentially rock, which is incredibly durable and can last several hundred years, often with little to no maintenance. It is safe to say that you will get at least 75 to 100 years out of your slate roof. However, it’s important that you do not put anything on your slate roof, such as sealant or paint, because this can cause the roof to age prematurely.

Natural Slate vs Synthetic Slate

Slate shingles are made from natural slate rock that is hand-split, giving the tile edges a beautifully non-uniform appearance. Synthetic slate shingles are made of recycled materials and are modeled after natural slate with chisel marks to add the unique, imperfect look of slate rock! Both are great options so we broke them down further in a blog post to help you pick what may be the best option for your project.

Are slate roofs expensive?

Honestly, slate is an expensive product and you can count on it being two or three times more expensive than a standard architectural shingle roof. The price of a slate roof will also vary depending on the size of the home and the roof pitch. We like to remind customers if they are interested in slate to think of it as a lifetime investment. Although the upfront cost is high, slate is very little maintenance and should last for the life of the home if installed correctly.

Would you choose slate or clay tile for your roof?

Both slate and clay tile are really good options if you are interested in a custom, artisanal look for your home. Both of these products come from the earth and are lifelong investments. Both products cost about the same. At the end of the day, it depends on what aesthetic you are looking to achieve on the exterior of your home. What is the best climate for slate?

Slate roof tiles’ hard surface and weight make them ideal for bad weather conditions including high winds, heavy rains, and hail. Slate roofs are one of the most naturally fire-resistant roofs in existence. From an environmental standpoint, slate is 100% eco-friendly; it is a natural product of the Earth and is completely safe to put back in the ground.
