Donating a Roof to Ronald McDonald House Charleston

Through our membership in the Roofing Alliance and its partnership with Ronald McDonald House Charities, our Charleston team donated $60,000 in labor to install a complete new roof on the Ronald McDonald House of Charleston, with materials donated by Carlisle SynTec. The house provides comfort and hope to hundreds of families each year while their children undergo medical treatment, and its roof was a decade overdue for replacement. We were honored to be part of putting a sound roof over it.

How the Project Came Together

It started with a service call. The Ronald McDonald House of Charleston asked us to identify leaks in their roof and make repairs, but what our team found was a collection of roof sections in varying stages of deterioration that threatened the integrity of the entire system. Most of the roof was beyond cost-feasible repair. Replacement was the honest recommendation, the one that made the best use of the charity’s funding and protected the house for the long term.

There was just one problem. The project came during the COVID-19 pandemic, when the House’s services were stretched and donations were limited, and there was no budget for a new roof. That is when our Charleston office pointed RMHC toward a resource built for exactly this situation: the Roofing Alliance.

What Is the Roofing Alliance’s Partnership with RMHC?

In 2017, the Roofing Alliance adopted all 165 Ronald McDonald House Charities roofs across the country. The partnership assures every RMHC location of timely inspections, service on needed repairs, and, where necessary, a full roof replacement, all provided by member contractors and manufacturers.

Charleston’s house became one of those projects. Carlisle SynTec donated the roofing materials, and our Charleston team donated the labor to install the new system. Going forward, Baker Roofing of Charleston has adopted the house for all future service it requires, a relationship we intend to nurture for years to come.

For decades, the Charleston Ronald McDonald House has been a home-away-from-home for families whose children are undergoing extensive medical treatment. Just steps from the hospital, families find comfortable beds, hot meals, a caring staff, and a four-legged friend named Gardy, all the small pieces of normal life that make an impossible season a little more bearable.

A roof is a small part of that. But it is the part that keeps everything under it safe and dry, and we are proud that the families staying there can focus on what matters, healing, without worrying about what is overhead.
