Slate Roof Replacement and New Construction | Historic University Building

Gates Hall at William & Mary pairs a historic brick building with new additions designed to match it, and the roof had to bring the two together seamlessly. Working with general contractor Kjellstrom + Lee Construction, our steep-slope team removed all of the existing slate and copper details from the original structure. We installed new natural slate and new copper flashing in their place, then roofed the new additions with EcoStar synthetic slate, a lightweight material made to look like natural stone. Where old meets new, we tied the roofs together at copper valleys, the channels that carry water off the roof where two slopes meet. The project was completed in October 2026.

Historic slate and copper work leaves little room for shortcuts. Every course of slate and every copper detail had to look like it belonged to the original building, and the transitions to the new additions had to stay watertight without drawing the eye. Our own crews handled the work from tear-off through the final copper gutters, and as a 100% employee-owned company, we stand behind every roof we put on.
